Forest (Flora and Fauna)


The forests in the area of moist and dry deciduous type. The common species available are
Guggilam, Tangedu, Sirimanu, Kamba, Yegisa, Nallamaddii, Gandra, Vepa etc. Bamboo shrubs
are sparsely scarcely scattered. The area has been showing quiescent decline since 1955 – 56
perhaps due to Podu Practice, indiscriminate grazing and browsing. To stem this, regeneration
programmes are being carried out. Chintapalli Teak Plantation is an off short of this. The latest
caper in this regeneration programme is raising of Teak, Silver Oak Trees, Coffee Plantations, as
this region is found suitable have been raised in about 1000 acres in Chintapalli, Minumuluru,
Devarapali and Ananthagiri regions by different agencies for different purposes. To wean out tribal
people form the pernicious practices of ‘Podu Cultivation’, the Forest Department is to conserve
soil. Coffee board, GCC & ITDA are to evolve cultures suited to non-traditional areas
The Visakhapatnam District has a livestock of about 14 lakhs out of which the cattle form 34%
Buffaloes 31% sheep 13% and Goats 17% about wild fauna Boars and Bisons are found in the
forest area of the region and isolated instances of Cheetas and Tigers.
