Soils


The soils can be generally classified as poor gravel to sandy loams, clay loams to heavy loams
with varying soil depth of 5” to 10”. The soils are poor nitrogen and phosphorous content and are
as generally acidic in nature. The pH of the soils varies from 6.5 to 8.5. The soils are mainly red sandy loams. Podu cultivation is frequently associated with the red soils that generally have a poor
humus content, poor nitrogen levels and low phosphorous contents. The fertility of the Podu land
is critically dependant on the amount of the tree cover and the resultant degree of accumulations of
leaf litter. The agency area being predominately a dry belt, with scant irrigation facilities and totally
dependant on rainfall. The agricultural practices of the tribals are traditional and conventional
resulting poor yields. The main crop is paddy with small patches of extents under paddy and
vegetables during Rabi with the irrigation facilities provided by check dams and other Minor
Irrigation schemes and the natural hill streams. The tribal agriculture in the region is basically
subsistence primitive type. The per capita use of chemical fertilizer, pesticides and high yielding
verities is minimal.
Red Loamy soils predominate with poor textured and easily drained. Black Cotton Soils are next
and with low organic & Phosphorous content.
The soils in this agency area are light to medium in texture with low fertility status. They are
continuously affected due to severe weathering aberration of natural disturbances. The soil
erosion is severe in agency area due to its varied and high topography of the land and heavy
rainfall received during the monsoon period and less vegetative cover on its upper parts of hills.
The majority of soils belong to sandy to Red Sand looms. Most of the soils are acidic to neutral in
their chemical behavior. Because of large scale, diversity of soil characteristics establishment of
one soil-testing laboratory is a felt need in the tribal area to plan agricultural practices and cropping
pattern on a scientific basis.
